Cigale (1948)
Wide-eyed and armoured,
primed for all possibilities
-
any moment…
unafraid -
any moment now…
And,
silent in mustard waiting,
nothing escapes the eye;
eye’s steel stare -
still there,
motionless,
focussed,
fearless -
any moment now…
Then,
so quick,
gone;
the moment turned
to prey seized from the flow
-
wide-eyed and defenseless;
consumed.
The mirror shimmers.
Thorn Cross (1954)
In reaching out
there is nobody there -
a
blue
still
silence
pervades the dawn
its circle somehow squared -
the contrivance of faith
frenziedly gesticulates
with semaphore limbs
their message lost –
so
which way now?
Seated Animal (1965)
Reaching out
only to be left
clutching at straws,
to be sunk in anonymity -
and so
ever fearful
of leaving history ajar,
lips sealed tight
as to give nothing away,
to have nothing taken,
twice shy -
shadowed face
shadowed place,
the sunshine
beyond
belongs to others now.
